I Saved 47% of My Under 30k Income in 2013

One of my goals for 2013 was to save 50% of my income.  I managed to save $14058.60 and earned $29711.86 for   a savings rate of 47.31%.  Although, I failed to meet my goal I’m happy with the savings rate and I’m not going to consider this goal a failure.  I was unemployed for most of 3 months during the year and only employed part-time for two more months of the year.  If I had obtained full-time employment for another month of the year I’m sure I would have met the 50% savings goal.  My income of just under $30k is also the best income year I’ve had.  I know it isn’t that great of an income for most people, but it seemed like a lot to me.  If I’d had this kind of income in earlier years I like to think I’d have saved more then as well.

I’ll be working two jobs to start this year so I have a chance to have an even better income this year.  Making more money is not a priority for me this year though.  I’m planning to take quite a bit of time off.  It is still possible that this will be an even better money making year since I might change my mind depending on what opportunities are available.  I won’t be setting a savings goal this year, but I do plan to save a large percentage of my income.

My other financial goal for 2013 was to keep my monthly expenses under $1274 a month.  I met that goal by ending up with an average monthly expense of $1164.81.  That goal may have been a little too easy.  I did also have a stretch goal of keeping my expenses under $1000 a month which I obviously didn’t make.   My goal for 2014 will be to keep my monthly expense average under $1000.   I am going to need some dental work this year which might make this goal unrealistic.  If that ends up being the case I’ll set a new monthly expense goal.

If you are curious as to how my expenses broke down I’ll share a few more numbers with you.  My largest expense was rent which added up to $4390 for the year.  There isn’t much I can currently do to reduce that expense.  My next largest expense was transportation.  I spent $1590.53 on gas and $1805 on car maintenance, auto insurance, and other car expenses.  I spent way too much on gas in 2013.  I plan to reduce that this year.  I currently have a longish commute which means I’ll be off to a bad start on gas spending though.  Once the commute job is over I’ll have to cut back on other driving.  I spent $1373.42 on health insurance and fitness center dues.  My health insurance is slightly cheaper this year and I no longer have the fitness center membership so this category should come down quite a bit this year.

I spent $457.96 on groceries and $985.32 on dining out last year.  That total will probably remain about the same this year, but I’d like to switch groceries to being the main expense rather than dining out.  I spent $674.22 on movies, $797.45 on travel, and $674.22 on other entertainment.  I didn’t always break out travel so there is a little bit of travel expense included in the other entertainment category.  I saved quite a bit of money on travel by using my Barclay Arrival rewards card.  I just signed up for the Capital One Venture card for a $500 bonus towards travel this year.  I’ll probably cut back some on the movie expense this year.  After going to the movies almost every week last year, my girlfriend and I are starting to get a little burned out on watching movies.

I spent $321.72 on my phone for the year.  I spent $137.82 for seven months of electricity.  I spent $112 for five months of internet, including an installation fee.  I spent $348.94 on miscellaneous and $65.91 on gifts.  I’m thinking some gifts were probably included in the miscellaneous category.  I also spent $74.48 on medical costs other than health insurance.  That is how I spent most of my money.  Other than the transportation category, I think I did pretty well.  I’ll try to do even better in 2014.

October 2013 Goal Reset

I set a goal of having a new post on Tight Fisted Miser and BankBonuses.com every day of this month.  I’ve already missed a couple of days so I’ve already missed that goal. Rather than just abandon the goal I am going to slightly modify the goal.  The new goal is that I will write 31 posts for Tight Fisted Miser and 31 posts for Bank Bonuses this month.  This will allow me to have a bad day and still meet the goal.  I need to get ahead on my writing so that I will have posts to go live while I’m on the cruise.  Plus, it is good to have extra posts for those days when I just don’t feel like writing.  Since I’m not working this month it should be easy to get this many posts written.  When I do have a job I always think I’ll get so much more done when the job is over.  The reality is that I barely get any more writing/blog work done when I don’t have a job than I do when I am working at a job.  When I have all the time in the world to get my writing and blog work done I can always think of something I’d rather do at the moment and put off the writing until later.  This often results in the writing being totally skipped and pushed to the next day.  I need to get out of the procrastination habit and develop a writing routine.

I’m also adding another goal for the month.  I’m setting a goal of making $500 from mystery shopping and selling stuff this month.  Most of the income should come from selling stuff.  I’ve been meaning to sell my comic book collection for years.  I did manage to sell a small part of the collection last year and made about $200.  If I get serious about listing all my comic books for sale I should easily make more than $500 from the remaining comic books.  I’m going to try a combination of Ebay and Craigslist.  Most of the comics are late ’80s Marvel comics. If you’re interested in buying any comics let me know.  I will have an update after the month is over to share how I did on this goal.

September 2013 Month in Review

It has been a while since I’ve posted and I have a few things I want to write about so I’m putting them all in this post. Looking back at what I did during the month should help me see how the month went and help me plan for the coming month.

The main focus of September was hiking the Katy Trail. The entire hike would have taken about a month, but my plan was always to hike just as long as I felt like hiking. It should come as no surprise that I got bored with hiking and returned home last week. I did manage to hike 105 miles of the trail. If I had been traveling in only one direction I would have completed almost half of the trail. I’ll likely return to the trail and finish it by bike or do more hiking at some point. Despite hiking over 100 miles I did not lose any weight. It appears that I can’t exercise enough to overcome my eating. My cardio condition hasn’t improved too much either. It is at least better than when I started and I have figured out my footwear so I no longer get blisters like the one pictured below.

September was a good month for me in regards to sports. I went to a Royals game for the first time in about 20 years which is about how long it has been since they had a decent team. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the game since I’m generally not a fan of being in big crowds. The Chiefs, which are the only sports team I’m a big fan of, have managed to start the season 4-0. The competition has been kinda weak, but this is already double the wins they had all of last season so I’m pretty happy.

I did not do a good job of writing blog posts in September. I went the last couple of weeks without writing anything. Since more practice writing should lead to better writing I need to get into the habit of writing more often. Therefore, I am setting a goal of writing a post for both Tight Fisted Miser and Bank Bonuses every day this month. That will be a total of 62 posts. I also plan to do some writing for my other blogs and perhaps even work on my book. Since I’m not working at a job right now I want to do something productive with at least some of my time.

Blogging and Traveling

I’m leaving tomorrow for another hike.  The hike will last somewhere between a few days and a month.  It depends on whether I feel like hiking the entire trail.  I’ll give more details about my hike in a later post.

Usually, when I go hiking or am otherwise traveling I just let the blogging slide.  This time around, since I am taking my car and should have access to the internet and a reasonable amount of free time everyday I plan to continue blogging.  I’m hoping that I will be able to do more writing than I normally do.  Now that I’m no longer working I have plenty of time to write, but I’m very good at finding other things to do besides write.  Even though I like writing I often end up doing everything else first and leave writing last.  I’m going to try to change that habit while I’m on this hike.  I know there are a lot of traveling bloggers so I know it is possible to travel and blog at the same time.  I like to think that I could one day be a traveling blogger.  If I can’t write regularly when I’m away from home though then being a traveling blogger isn’t going to happen.

There shouldn’t be a need to update this post.  If you see new posts coming out three times a week or so then you will know that I’m meeting my goal of blogging while traveling.   If it seems like I have just disappeared from the blog then you will know I haven’t managed to blog while traveling.

2013 Goals – Halfway Point Review

My two goals for 2013 are to save 50% of my income and to live on less than a minimum wage income of $1274 a month. I have shared on the blog if I met the goals for each particular month. Now that the year is more than halfway over, I want to see how I’m doing towards my goals overall.

For the first goal of saving 50% of my income I’m doing pretty good. Through the end of June I had made $18,360.73 and I had saved $9550. That comes to savings rate of about 52%. The rate won’t improve in July, but since I will make good money in August I should be able to save way over 50% of my income for that month and get the rate even higher. Unless I make almost nothing the last few months of the year or I have a financial emergency this goal should be easily met.

For the goal of living on less than a minimum wage income of $1274 a month I’m not doing too good. Through the end of June I had spent $8257.51, which comes out to $1367.25 a month. Car repairs are the main reason I’m not currently meeting this goal. I still think it is possible to achieve this goal. July spending should be slightly less than the target amount and I’m hoping for big improvements in the following months.

I will continue to update how I’m doing on my goals monthly and once the year is over I will share the results.
