On an email list I belong to a member was recommending this gas-saving device. It apparently works like the fuel economy gauge that many cars have in them already but supposedly is more accurate. It helps you save gas by helping you adjust your driving habits to be more fuel efficient. The reviews I’ve read on the web seem good but at a price of $169.95 it would have to save a lot of gas to be worth it. It also has other features but since it is only for 1996 or newer cars it won’t work for me so I haven’t looked into them too much.
Another possible device for those with older cars is a vacuum gauge. There are some of them made especially as mpg gauges but you can get regular vacuum gauges for as little as $15. These aren’t very accurate at telling your instant mpg but they are good at helping you drive more efficiently. Since these are much cheaper than the ScanGauge it shouldn’t take nearly as long for you to make back the purchase price.
Hmm…I wonder if those are really worth the investment. Sometimes people can’t help blowing through gas, like getting stuck in stop and start traffic. I think the best way is to just cut back on driving all-together and start carpooling or using public transportation. From a Roper poll we just commissioned, it appears over half the country is already having to cut back: http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/home/permalink/?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20080527006417&newsLang=en. I wonder what’s going to happen when it gets up to $7 or $8 a gallon…makes me sick to even think about it.
Sounds like a big scam, stay away from it. If there was a cheap way for cars to get better fuel efficiency, manufacturers would already be putting it in cars.
Emily- I wonder if people are really cutting back on using gas as much as they say. If gas goes to $7 or $8 we’ll see people cutting back a lot more.
David- It isn’t a scam. The device doesn’t save gas directly but by altering your driving habits to be more fuel efficient. It will save you gas unless you’re already a perfectly efficient driver. Whether it saves enough to justify the cost is another question.
Oh ok, I know what you are talking about then. That sounds cool. I kinda wanted one of those things/still want. Don’t know if I would bother paying that much for it though, plus my car is a ’94
