Book Review and Giveaway: Shift

by Andy Hough on June 14, 2010

This week I am giving away a copy of the book, Shift: How to Reinvent Your Business, Your Career, and Your Personal Brand.  This is a slightly interesting book.  It starts off with the author’s story of how he lost over 250 pounds by eating up to 50 oranges a day.  I liked that story but it went on too long.  I kept wondering when I would get to the part about reinvention.  I ended up skimming over the last half of the first part and going to part two which is more focused on the reinvention.   There are some good general ideas for reinventing yourself but I don’t think enough specifics are provided.  There are lots of anecdotes in the book about advertising, which is understandable since the author is in advertising, but I didn’t find the anecdotes to be at all interesting.  I suppose those who are interested in advertising might have enjoyed them.  Also there is lots of name-dropping about all the celebrities the author has met and knows which I found to be annoying after a while.  The book seems a little disorganized but overall is a slightly interesting read.

In case I didn’t make the book sound good enough that you want  to win it I am also including a copy of the New Yorker 2010 Desk Diary.  I will be giving away more of the diaries next week.  To enter this week’s contest all you need to do is leave a comment.  Limit one entry per person.  I will only ship to U.S. mailing addresses to keep my shipping costs reasonable.  The winner will be chosen at random on Friday June 18, 2010.  Good luck!

Its well past the time to reinvent myself. I think this book will be just what I need to get started.

I don’t think I can go for the 50 oranges but in retirement, reinventing is a whole new challenge and I think that this might give me some insight about a new way of looking at things.
