How to Help Haiti

by Andy Hough on January 15, 2010

If you would like to donate money to the relief effort in there are several ways to do so. The easiest is to text the word “Haiti” to 90999 and donate $10 to the Red Cross. I did this myself and the process was simple. After you text you will receive a reply asking you to confirm that you want to donate $10. After you confirm you will receive another message thanking you for your donation. The donation will be charged to your cell phone bill.

You can also go directly to the charity’s web site and donate. A couple of the major sites are RedCross.org and HearttoHeart.org. I like Heart to Heart because only 2% of their contributions go to administrative and fundraising activities. The rest goes directly to relief and development programs.

One more way you can help Haiti is by making a loan through MicroPlace. On the site click on Find a Gift Now, then Latin America, then Haiti. I’ve done this as well. It is pretty simple and you can fund your loan via PayPal.

I’m going to make a larger donation to Red Cross or Heart to Heart. That donation will fulfill my promise to give away $500 that I made as part of the weight-loss challenge. I’ve already given away some money. I need to figure out how much more I need to give away to hit the $500 mark. Considering I will probably make less than $1000 this month this contribution is a lot of money for me but I try to not actually be a tight-fisted miser all the time.

You are a wonderful person and I can’t think of a better way to complete your promise. And the last line made me laugh. I know that you aren’t about being miserly but about being smart.
Have a wonderful weekend!
