2009 Year in Review

by Andy Hough on December 31, 2009

Since it is the last day of 2009 it is time to review this year at Tight Fisted Miser.  I set three goals for myself this year.  They were to increase my passive income, lose 30 pounds, and increase my RSS subscribers to 500.

I did manage to increase my passive income.  That was a rather vague goal though and easily accomplished just by buying some more dividend-paying stocks.

I didn’t come close to losing 30 pounds.  My weight actually increased from 214.1 pounds at the beginning of the year to 217.8 pounds today.  I thought it would be easy to lose this weight since I was going to be hiking and living abroad much of the year.  When I changed those plans it became much more difficult to lose the weight.

My RSS subscribers peaked at 468.  That was considerable progress from the beginning of the year but short of my goal of 500.  The flaw in this goal was I didn’t have a specific plan to reach 500 subscribers.  Looking back at my posts for 2009 almost all of my better posts were in the first half of the year.  My writing just wasn’t as good in the second half of the year and I need to get that back on track.

Overall, I think there were two major things that kept me from meeting my goals.  The first was not having a specific enough plan for meeting my goals.  I talked about my goals being S.M.A.R.T. but they weren’t actually S.M.A.R.T.  The second thing was not following through on the plans I did have.  I need to be less wishy-washy about my plans next year.

2009 wasn’t all bad though.  I did graduate law school, visited several countries I hadn’t been to before, and did a little hiking on the Appalachian Trail for the first time in several years.

For 2010 I will be setting smaller goals throughout the year and I will share them with you as I am working on the plans to attain the goals.
