Finding Missing Money

by Andy Hough on April 14, 2008

While reading a post at another PF blog (sorry, I can’t remember which one or I’d give them credit) I read about the site MissingMoney.com which searches the databases of most states to find whether they have your unclaimed property. I’ve done this search before of my home state’s database but it only found an unclaimed amount of .63, not worth printing out a claim form and mailing away for. Since I’ve lived in several different states I decided to see if a  Missing Money search would come up with anything. It revealed that the state of Texas is holding $10.90 for me from Capital One. This is kind of strange since I still have an account with Capital One and they’ve never had a problem sending me statements. I think they might try a little harder to locate you when you owe them than when they owe you.  My plan for this money is to use it to replace my bike. I think I can get a bike for around that amount at a garage sale. If you haven’t searched for unclaimed money lately you should give the site a try, it is free and only take a couple minutes so there isn’t anything to lose.
